Teeth whitening has become the most requested procedure in the cosmetic dentistry world today. According to the definition provided by the FDA, Whitening will restore a tooth’s usual color and bleaching will whiten the tooth beyond its natural color. Methods vary and are all very effective to achieving the desired color for your teeth.
Food and Beverages: The most common cause of dental stains. The food and beverages we consume contain dark colored chromogens that leave our teeth with a brown, yellow, or dark tine to them. For example, these chromogens are found most commonly in: Red wine, Tea, Tomatoes and Soy Sauce.
Tobacco Use: Dark yellow or brownish stains on teeth are very common among people who smoke cigarettes or use chewing tobacco. Having teeth whitening done is a way to reduce these stains.
Dental Infection: An infected tooth or a tooth suffering from a dead dental root may lend a dark hue to the inside of your tooth. In this instance, a composite bonding, porcelain veneer or a porcelain crown can be used to change the color of that tooth and match it with your other teeth after they have been whitened.
Fluorosis: Some people are exposed to too much fluoride during childhood and suffer from fluorosis. This condition can sometimes cause dark brown or yellow stains on the tooth. It may also cause grooves and other irregularities to the surfaces of some (or all) of your teeth. Fortunately, there are a number of options available to help get your teeth back to a radiant white hue.
When you decide to lighten your smile, we will make impressions of your teeth and fabricate custom whitening trays that fit closely around your teeth. This will maximize their exposure to the whitening gel and also protect your delicate gum tissue. Dr. Gandhi will select a gel she thinks will work best for your treatment. If dental sensitivity is an issue, a gentle whitening gel can be used that will minimize the feeling of discomfort. We will explain step by step how to put the gel in your trays and provide instruction for wearing your trays.
Oxygen in the peroxide gel will travel through your dental enamel, breaking apart the bonds between stained molecules. The exact duration of your treatment will be decided by Dr. Gandhi based on a number of factors including the degree of discoloration and your response to the whitening treatment.
